HONEYMOON OVER? Secretariat Gates Locked As Oyo Workers Protest Over Salary Deduction, Others

In what looks like relationship turned sour, Oyo workers on Monday morning besieged the entrance of the state secretariat protesting over non-payment of salary deductions arrears and subsequent payment of full salary by the ‘Seyi Makinde administration.

Our Media recalls that the government had enjoyed support of the workers, even when workers were not supposed to show love.

In their hundreds, the workers had stormed the frontage of the secretariat as early as 7 am forcing security agents attached to the facility to shut the gate.

Our Media had reported how the workers last Thursday met on the decision.

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, in a statement yesterday said it is meeting Thursday morning at 7:45 am.

According to the union, the response of the government to their ultimatum does not address their demands.

Being the Communiqué issued at the end of a Joint meeting of NLC/TUC as well as INC in the State held on Tuesday 25th July, 2023 at NLC Secretariat.

“After intense deliberation on government’s written response to the 4-day ultimatum the Labour Unions in the State issued to the State Government to address the following demands:

Payment of Salary deductions arrears and subsequent payment of full salary. Palliatives for workers. Upward review of pensions. Payment of Leave bonuses from 2021. Payment of Gratuity to retired civil Servants that has been stagnated since 2021. Release of promotion letters for the promoted staff and lift embargo on promotion for 2021 and 2022.

“Responding to this demands at the tails of the ultimatum, the government said we should give her 21days in the minimum to work on the deductions.

“To us, this response do not address our demands as it involves the general hardship workers and Oyo State residence are going through and it is in a bid to give feedback and discuss on what is to be done that the leadership of NLC, TUC and INC in the State resolve to convoke Congress of all workers in the State on Thursday 27th July, 2023 by 7:45am prompt at the NLC Secretariat.

“All workers in the state are urged to resume work at NLC secretariat for deliberation on Thursday 27th July, 2023 by 7.45am prompt,” the communique reads.
