The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested Omoyele Sowore, convener of the #RevolutionNow movement, upon his arrival at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
Sowore, who had been in the United States with his family, was taken into custody immediately after his flight landed on Sunday.
Prior to his arrest, a leaked DSS memo had revealed plans to detain Sowore upon his return to Nigeria.
According to SaharaReporters the memo was signed by Adeola D. Ali, cited Sowore’s involvement in the #EndBadGovernance protests and upcoming October 1 demonstration as justification.
Sowore had earlier confirmed being aware of the directive, stating that his name had been added to a security watchlist. He criticized the new DSS Director General for prioritizing political vendettas over addressing Nigeria’s insecurity.
Sowore’s arrest comes after he announced plans for an October protest, which he vowed would proceed despite potential detention. His arrest has sparked concerns about freedom of speech and assembly in Nigeria.
