Our children threw stones at me after my wife poisoned their minds against me

Grade A Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State has adjourned for judgment, a divorce suit brought before it by a man, Muyi, against his wife, Aina, whom he accused of raining curses on him and constantly fighting and embarrassing him in public.

Muyi also said that Aina was in the habit of monitoring his movements.

The plaintiff further said that the defendant poisoned their children’s mind against him and that they now throw stones at him.

Muyi thus prayed for the dissolution of his marriage to his wife.

He also begged for custody of their children so that he could train and inculcate in them the right values.

The plaintiff further requested an order restraining her from threatening, fighting, and interfering with his private life.

Aina denied all the allegations levelled against her and refused that their union be dissolved.

The defendant explained that the plaintiff was in the habit of staying away from home, thus neglecting her and their children.

She stated that he was a brute and fond of beating her.

According to Aina, Muyi was irresponsible and always sent their children who were still underage to buy alcohol and cigarettes, which did not go down well with her.

Muyi, giving his evidence, said, “I paid N20,000, which to me is a reasonable amount as my wife’s bride price, but she has refused that I enjoyed the worth of this money.

“I derive no pleasure in our marriage because my wife is a thorn in the flesh.

“My wife’s has a wrong orientation about marriage.

“To her, marriage is all about fighting and raining curses on one’s husband. She, therefore, fights me nonstop.

“My job often takes me out of town, and instead of returning home to rest, my wife welcomes me back with a fight.

“She will always raise an accusation against me and refuse to hear my side.

“Aina is in the habit of raising her voice any time we argued, which always calls our neighbours’ attention to our home.

“She once embarrassed me when she came to fight me while attending the landlord association meeting. She disrupted our activities for that day.

“My wife has refused that I move about freely.

“She is always suspicious of me and therefore monitors my movements.

“My wife also has a caustic tongue. She abuses and rains curses on me.

“Aina has vowed to ruin my life and cut it short.

“She always said it while cursing me that I would perish in a ghastly motor accident and that my remains would be packed and brought back home in a plastic bag.

“I have ceased to make progress because of my wife’s constant curses.

“My wife did the worst by turning our children against me.

“He poisoned their minds with her many lies, which resulted in their being withdrawn and hostile towards me.

“My lord, my children did the unpardonable; they threw stones at me.

“I am yet to get out of the shock.

“There is obviously no future in my marriage to my wife.

“I, therefore, pray for divorce.

“I also plead that the custody of our children be granted me so that I can give them proper training and inculcate in them the right values.

“I further request an order restraining my wife from threatening, fighting, and interfering with my private life.”

Aina in her response said: “All my husband has said about me are lies.

“My lord, I do not accede to divorce. My husband and I are going to glue together forever.

“He has been maltreating me because he paid just N20,000 as my bride price.

“My husband is ever hardly at home.

“He will desert the home for days, not bothering about our feeding and general welfare.

“He will return home in the company of friends, bathe, change his clothes and go out again.

“My husband keeps late nights. He will return home at odd hours, bang on the window, and order that we open the door.

“Our neighbours are weary of his constant disturbance of their sleep.

“My husband is also a liar.

“He once told me he was going on an official assignment outside town, but I later saw him riding on a commercial bicycle within town.

“I called him on the phone to ask about his whereabouts, and he lied that he had got to his supposed destination.

“I threw his lie at his face.

“I told him I saw him a few minutes ago on a commercial bicycle.

“He was ashamed of himself.

“My husband insisted that our children should fast during the last Ramadan, but they started complaining of stomach ache after a while.

“I ordered them to stop their fast and collect money from their father for food.

“My husband got infuriated at their demand and pounced on me.

“He descended on me with punches and almost killed me.

“He also lied that our children stoned him. He cooked up the story.

“My husband is in the habit of sending our children who are underage to buy alcoholic drinks and cigarettes.

“I frown on this, and I always call his attention to their tender age.

“The last time we quarrelled over this, he stormed out of the house and refused to return.

“He has stopped giving our children feeding allowance and neglected their education and other needs. “

The court president, Mrs S.M Akintayo, after she had heard both parties closed the case and adjourned the same till July 21 for judgment.
