US universities cancel graduation over protests, 500+ arrested

US universities have cancelled graduation ceremonies due to student protests against Israel’s actions in Gaza with almost 550 arrests in the past week.

The demonstrators, mainly students, demand that universities sever ties with companies aiding Israel’s Gaza operations and, in some cases, with Israel itself.

Protests erupted at major universities like Columbia, resulting in clashes with police and mass arrests. At the University of Southern California, 93 arrests led to the cancellation of the main graduation ceremony.

Similarly, 108 were arrested at Emerson College, and 28 at Emory University, where police reportedly used tear gas and tasers.

Despite police intervention, some universities like Harvard have not taken action against protesters. At Columbia University, where the movement began, tensions persist as students refuse to dismantle their protest encampment.

While accusations of harassment against Jewish students have surfaced, protest leaders deny any anti-Semitic intent.
