We often worry about the colour of our teeth because the smile is a natural cosmetic and the teeth play a major role in having a confident smile. There are several reasons why your teeth are not sparking as you want them to be. Teeth discoloration is very common and can lead to several oral-related problems or it could even be that the manifestation is a result of an underlying illness. Below we will be discussing teeth discoloration, types, causes, prevention, and treatment.
What is Teeth Discoloration?
Teeth discoloration is referred to the colour changes in the teeth which the defect result from the deposition of various pigmented substances either on the teeth surface or in the inner layers of the teeth.
Types of teeth discoloration.The major types of tooth discoloration are two.
Extrinsic discoloration:
This is the type of discoloration that occurs at the outer surface of the teeth as a result of food debris that has built up over a long period, which covers the outer surface of the teeth.
Intrinsic Discoloration:
This type of discoloration is a result of a defect that occurs in the internal structures of the teeth which then manifest at the outer surface.
Cause of Teeth Discoloration.


There are several causes of teeth discoloration, below are the most common causes of teeth discoloration.

  1. Poor Oral Hygiene:
    Refusing to brush and floss daily is one of the major causes of extreme stains on the teeth. When one refuses to brush and floss, the food debris in the mouth build up on the surface of one’s teeth and form a thick layer which later change is the natural colour of the teeth.

2. Nicotine Stain: The use of tobacco and long intakes of foods and drinks substances that contains nicotine causes teeth discoloration over time.

3. Medication: The use of certain medications or drugs can cause discoloration like tetracycline or doxycycline used by a pregnant mother can cause intrinsic teeth discoloration in the unborn child.

4. Systemic Diseases: Teeth discoloration can be a result of underlying ailments in the body. For one to be sure of this, one has to visit the Dentist.

How to Prevent Teeth Discoloration.

1.Practice good oral hygiene by brushing your teeth twice daily in the morning and at night. Rinse your mouth when you eat during the daytime and floss your teeth regularly.

2. Avoid the use of tobacco and long usage of any other substance that has nicotine.

3. Avoid using the medication without a prescription from your doctor especially during pregnancy.

4. Brush your teeth using the right brushing technique.

4. Brush your teeth using the right toothpaste. Fluoridated toothpaste should be used for brushing the teeth.

5 . Treatment
Teeth discoloration is not untreatable, but to know the treatment that will be appropriate for the kind of discoloration that you have, you need to visit your Dentist.
